Indigo Dyeing Workshop

May 19 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

$310.00
RARE OPPORTUNITY! Farmer Whitney is offering her indigo dyeing workshop for the first time since 2019. This long-awaited workshop will be a deep dive into tropical indigo dyeing traditions using a fermentation vat of Indigofera tinctora.  The morning will begin with an introduction to indigo and a discussion of its history as we prepare to make a vat together. Attendees will gain hands on experience making this vat and learn the key steps in preparing a vat so that they will have the necessary skills to make their own 5-gallon vat when they return home (all materials will be provided to take home as transporting a full vat isn’t so fun!).  Then we will use our existing 50 gallon vat (named Bertha) to dye 3 projects. The projects, 2 on fabric and 1 on thread/yarn, will explore different patterning traditions of Japan and Africa and again, provide invaluable hands-on experience for having the best color-retention on different materials.

Beverages and light refreshments will be provided. Please bring your own lunch, however.

This workshop is held mostly outdoors and you will be surrounded by the hum of the farm, from the ducks splashing on the stream to the sheep and goats saying hello to new visitors on a spring Sunday.
